چکیده

Improved methods for prostate guided-biopsy are required to effectively guide needle biopsy to the suspected site. In addition, tissue stiffness measurement would help identifying a suspected site to perform biopsy because stiffness has been shown to correlate with pathology. More importantly, early detection of prostate cancer may guide therapy and eliminate invasive procedures. Vibro-acoustography (VA) is sensitive to tissue stiffness and may allow locating an appropriate side for biopsy. Furthermore, Shearwave Dispersion Ultrasound Vibrometry (SDUV) can provide quantitative information about tissue viscoelasticity. For prostate applications, the SDUV technique should be guided by an imaging modality leading to a better biopsy and reduction of the sampling error. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of combining VA and SDUV to perform “virtual biopsy” at a specific location. Shear elasticity and viscosity measurements of an excised human prostate are obtained and discussed.

In vivo thyroid vibro-acoustography: a pilot study

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of a noninvasive ultrasound-based method, vibro-acoustography (VA), for thyroid imaging and determine the feasibility and challenges of VA in detecting nodules in thyroid. METHODS Our study included two parts. First, in an in vitro study, experiments were conducted on a number of excised thyroid specimens randomly taken from aut...

Vibro-acoustography: an imaging modality based on ultrasound-stimulated acoustic emission.

We describe theoretical principles of an imaging modality that uses the acoustic response of an object to a highly localized dynamic radiation force of an ultrasound field. In this method, named ultrasound-stimulated vibro-acoustography (USVA), ultrasound is used to exert a low-frequency (in kHz range) force on the object. In response, a portion of the object vibrates sinusoidally in a pattern ...

Bone Imaging Using Tone-Burst Vibro-acoustography and Pulse-Echo Ultrasound: A Qualitative Comparative Study

This paper presents a comparative study between tone-burst (TB) vibro-acoustography (VA) and pulseecho ultrasound imaging on bone tissue. Vibroacoustography is an innovative technique that uses the dynamic (oscillatory) radiation force of ultrasound to remotely vibrate an object or a part of it. In response to this force, an acoustic signal is emitted which is related to the object’s mechanical...

In vivo swine kidney viscoelasticity during acute gradual decrease in renal blood flow: pilot study.

Elasticity imaging methods have been used to study kidney mechanical properties and have demonstrated that the kidney elastic modulus increases with disease state. However, studies in swine suggests that kidney elastic modulus is also affected by hemodynamic variables. A newly emerging method called Shearwave Dispersion Ultrasound Vibrometry (SDUV) offers a tool to determine renal elasticity an...

Application of image restoration algorithms in vibro-acoustography images

Vibro-acoustography (VA) is an imaging modality that produces an image of the mechanical response of an object to a localized dynamic radiation force of an ultrasound field. This technique has been studied and used in clinical applications as to image calcification in breast tissue and arteries. This paper presents the application of restoration algorithms to VA images.
